Design Competition titled “The Architecture of Boundaries” (Group Entry)
Located in the heart of Old Dhaka, the Central Jail of Dhaka bears the footprints of all the cultural, social, and political changes that have taken place for more than 200 years. It exists as an integral part of the morphology and infrastructure of old Dhaka and yet detached from its surroundings, with its 22’ high boundary walls of the colonial period creating a mixed sense of curiosity, fear and safety among the citizens. The relocation of the central jail has created the opportunity to reintegrate the area and the opportunity to exchange socio-cultural values, share ideas, connectedness, and celebrate.
While reintegrating the core central jail area with the surrounding context our intention is to facilitate the area conserving and preserving the "Cultural Heritage" of the Old Dhaka. Ensuring new developments do not come in conflict with the heritage site with all the preserved buildings for adaptive reuses, trees, and intimate open spaces. Maximization of green surfaces, trees, and landscaping without interposing the congested surrounding context was a prime design consideration.
